MILITARY INTEREST FALKLANDS CAMPAIGN, OPERATION BLACK BUCK 6: ON THE RETURN JOURNEY VULCAN BOMBER XM597, FLOWN BY SQUADRON LEADER NEIL McDOUGALL, WAS FORCED TO DIVERT TO RIO DE JANEIRO IN BRAZIL AFTER ITS INFLIGHT-REFUELLING PROBE BROKE. ATTEMPTS WERE MADE TO LAUNCH REMAINING MISSILES, BUT ONE STUCK, ALL CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTATION WAS JETTISONED, AND A ''MAY DAY" SIGNAL SENT. THE BRAZILIAN AUTHORITIES CLEARED HER TO LAND, WHICH SHE DID WITH LESS THAN 2000 LBS OF FUEL REMAINING, NOT ENOUGH TO HAVE COMPLETED A CIRCUIT OF THE AIRPORT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS INTERNED FOR NINE DAYS, BEFORE THE CREW AND AIRCRAFT WERE RETURNED ON JUNE 11th, BUT THE MISSILE WAS KEPT! UPON RELEASE THE FIRST ACTION OF SQUADRON LEADER NEIL McDOUGALL WAS TO BUY TWO BOTTLES OF ANTARCTICA BEER, ONE OF WHICH HE DRANK, THE OTHER WAS FLOWN BACK TO THE UK. THIS BOTTLE WAS SIGNED BY SQUADRON LEADER McDOUGALL AND LATER ENTERED INTO A RAFFLE AT THE RAF CLUB (BOTTLE IN A WOOD CASE WITH PROVENANCE).
