Description:
Rare late Victorian Burgess & Leigh earthenware teapot of shaped serpentine rectangular form, with an angular scroll spout and handle, and a slide-on cover, decorated with two polychrome reserves with elephants, riders, other figures and hunting dogs within a floral border, Rg No 285771 for 1896, Regt Shape No 281720, H 18.3cm, W 27.8cm [The design of this teapot was registered by the manufacturers in 1896, but was followed by a law suit from Huntley & Palmer who claimed it was a copy of their biscuit tin design, resulting in it being prematurely discontinued and replaced with a monochrome version. It is thus a rare example of an empire influenced Aesthetic Movement teapot]
